Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations Awards Primary Stroke Care Certification to Morton Plant Mease Health Care
01/06/2005

Only Health Care System in the State to Receive National Recognition of Stroke Care

CLEARWATER, Fla. (December 6, 2004) - Morton Plant Mease Health Care has been awarded the Gold Seal of ApprovalTM for Primary Stroke Care from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). The hospitals served by Morton Plant Mease Health Care - Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater; Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor; Mease Dunedin Hospital, Dunedin and Morton Plant North Bay, New Port Richey - are the only hospitals on Florida's west coast to receive the award and constitute the only multiple health care systems in Florida to be so honored.

To receive the Gold Seal for Primary Stroke Care, Morton Plant Mease underwent a rigorous evaluation process that included hospital site visits. According to JCAHO, the primary stroke care certification is indicative of compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of established clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and performance measurement and improvement activities.

"This award means that our protocols for treating stroke patients are comparable with the best programs in the country," said Philip K. Beauchamp, president and chief executive officer, Morton Plant Mease Health Care. "JCAHO's certification is a message to the community that top quality stroke care is available in our area."

As part of its review, JCAHO evaluated standards compliance in the areas of program management, clinical information management, supporting patient/participant self-management, delivering or facilitating clinical care and performance management. "Joint Commission certification assures consumers that Morton Plant Mease is committed to quality and safety excellence," said Maureen Connors Potter, executive director, disease-specific care certification program, Joint Commission. "It is the Gold Seal of Approval for health care quality and safety."

The Joint Commission Certification Program provides a comprehensive evaluation of disease or condition-specific services and represents the gold standard in health care. For more information, visit www.jcaho.org.

Established in 1994, Morton Plant Mease Health Care is an entity providing administrative and other services to Morton Plant and Mease hospitals in Pinellas County and Morton Plant North Bay Hospital in Pasco County.
