Morton Plant North Bay Becomes First Completely Digital Hospital in Pasco|
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (May 20, 2004)- The lightning-fast speed and accuracy of digital technology will now help patients at Morton Plant North Bay obtain their radiology test results even sooner. Morton Plant North Bay is the first hospital in Pasco County to implement Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) - a computerized system that creates digital images of X-rays, CT scans and ultrasounds.
"As technology has advanced, many people have moved from film photography to digital for their personal photos, and PACS is very similar," said William Jennings, chief operating officer and administrator, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital. "With PACS, we can capture, store and transmit radiology images electronically, ultimately eliminating the need to use film for X-rays and other testing images."
Working much like a digital camera, the PACS system allows images from X-ray, nuclear medicine, ultrasounds or scans to be created and viewed without the use of film. The images are then digitally transferred into the hospital's system and can be viewed on a computer screen almost immediately after the test is complete. Physicians and radiology technologists can use several features to adjust the image for optimal viewing. When fully implemented, physicians will be able to access the PACS images from computers within the hospital's network.
"PACS is some of the latest imaging technology offered in the country's best hospitals and can give our physicians real-time availability to their patients' test results," said John Couris, vice president of medical imaging and health services for Morton Plant Mease Health Care. "The system has the potential to significantly reduce wait times for images and reports, making it easier for doctors to diagnose and treat patients."
