2003 Press Releases
National Nursing Designation Given to Morton Plant Mease Health Care

CLEARWATER, Fla. (August 6, 2003)---The American Nurses Credentialing Center has awarded Magnet Designation to the nursing program of Morton Plant Mease Health Care. Morton Plant Mease Health Care provides nursing and other services at four Tampa Bay area hospitals - Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater; Mease Dunedin Hospital, Dunedin; Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor and Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, New Port Richey.

"The entire purpose of Magnet Designation is to recognize nursing excellence and elevate the standard of nursing care in our hospitals," said Lisa Johnson, R.N., vice president of patient services for Morton Plant Mease Health Care. "It distinguishes hospitals that deliver the gold standard of nursing care. More and more, Magnet Designated hospitals are sought by the best nurses in the country."

Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Magnet Recognition Program recognizes hospitals that provide the very best in nursing care and uphold the tradition of nursing practice. As the highest level of recognition that the ANCC can extend to hospitals, the program also provides a vehicle for disseminating successful practices and strategies among nursing systems.

"Magnet Designation is the most prestigious national recognition of nursing care," noted Johnson. Morton Plant Mease Health Care is the 77th hospital system in the United States to receive Magnet Designation and the seventh in Florida. It is the sixth health care system in the country to achieve Magnet.

The Magnet application process took approximately 18 months and included a four-day on-site visit by ANCC appraisers. According to the ANCC Commission on Magnet Recognition, the program recognizes excellence in:

* The management, philosophy and practices of nursing services

* Adherence to national standards for improving the quality of patient care services

* Leadership of the nurse administrator in supporting professional practice and continued competence of nurses

* Understanding and respecting the cultural and ethnic diversity of patients, their significant others and health care providers

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the ANCC is the nation's largest and foremost nursing credentialing organization. According to the ANCC, achieving Magnet Designation means a hospital or health care organization will serve as a "magnet" demonstrating a reputation that is among the finest in the nation. The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program recognizes hospitals dedicated to providing excellent nursing care services and monitors each organization's compliance with Magnet Program standards.

Established in 1994, Morton Plant Mease Health Care is an entity providing administrative and other services, including nursing services, to Morton Plant and Mease hospitals in Pinellas County and Morton Plant North Bay Hospital in Pasco County.
