BayCare Behavioral Health, Pasco County Sheriff's Office Partner on Pill Drop Event
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla., (July 23, 2013) - As part of its commitment to improving the health of the local community, BayCare Behavioral Health and Morton Plant North Bay Hospital are partnering with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and the Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) to host a free Pill Drop Event where members of the community can drop off unused or expired medications for safe disposal.
The Pill Drop Event is planned for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday Aug. 17, 2013, at the Morton Plant North Bay Hospital parking lot, 6600 Madison Ave., New Port Richey.
The following items will be accepted at the Pill Drop, which is being offered as a free service to the community:
– Expired or unwanted prescriptions and medicine
– Vitamins and herbals
– Veterinary medications
– Over-the-counter medications
– Sharps that are contained in the normal household containers
Pill Drop events provide a safe, convenient, responsible, and environmentally safe means of disposal, while also raising awareness about the potential for abuse of these medications. No personal information will be requested from individuals who are disposing of medications.
In 2011, two thirds of teens got prescription medications to use recreationally from family and friends, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
Twenty-two percent of high school seniors report that they have misused a prescription medication, according to the Monitoring the Future survey.
