Student Athletes in Pinellas County: Get Ready to Hit the Field with Free Sports Physicals from Morton Plant Mease

CLEARWATER, Fla., (April 9, 2013) – Student athletes can get a jump on making sure they are in good health when they hit the field for various high school sports next fall. Morton Plant Mease’s sports medicine program is providing physicians, certified athletic trainers, and physical therapists to offer Pinellas County high school student athletes with free sports physicals.

The exams include checks of height, weight, blood pressure, vision, lungs, and musculoskeletal system. If a student is found to have a medical condition needing additional treatment, the student will be referred to a Morton Plant Mease specialist for follow-up at a later date.

The free sports physicals will be offered on the following dates at two locations:

Saturday April 27, 2013, 8 a.m. to Noon

Morton Plant Hospital, Ptak Orthopaedic & Neuroscience Pavilion

Barrett Outpatient Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Center

430 Morton Plant St., Ste. 101, Clearwater, FL

Saturday May 4, 2013, 8 a.m. to Noon

Palm Harbor University High School, Gymnasium

1900 Omaha St., Palm Harbor, FL

The sports physicals will be on a first-come, first-served basis. All student athletes are required by the Florida High School Athletic Association to complete a physical evaluation before participating in high school sporting activities.

The annual sports physicals are part of the athletic training outreach program, which is a partnership between Morton Plant Mease Health Care and the Pinellas County School System. Morton Plant Mease’s sports medicine program also partners with Pinellas County Schools to offer concussion screenings for student athletes at some schools as part of the ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) program.

Student athletes under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, or registration forms must be pre-signed. Bring or wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, if you use them. The exams done by Morton Plant Mease are complimentary, however, a small fee may be required by some schools to support their booster clubs.
