Morton Plant Mease's Sleep Disorders Centers Receive Recognition by American Academy of Sleep Medicine|
CLEARWATER, Fla., (February 17, 2011) - Morton Plant Mease's Sleep Disorders Centers are nothing to yawn about - all are now fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). A chronic sleep disorder such as sleep apnea leads to sleep deprivation, causing health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, onset of diabetes, mental illnesses and injuries. 70 million Americans are not getting the seven to nine hours of sleep recommended by the National Sleep Foundation.
Receiving the AASM accreditation is the gold standard for sleep disorders centers. The sleep disorders center at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater received AASM accreditation in 2008 and the following four sleep centers recently became accredited:
- Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, New Port Richey
- Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor
- Bardmoor Outpatient Center, Largo
- BayCare Outpatient Center, Tampa
To receive a five-year accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional care by the AASM. The accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center's facility and staff, evaluation of patient contacts, physician training and testing procedures.
The AASM is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine. The AASM currently accredits more than 2,200 sleep medicine centers and laboratories across the country.
