Morton Plant Volunteers Offer Free Weekend Camp for Adult Cancer Survivors
11/12/2009
CLEARWATER, Fla., (August 5, 2009)—Now entering its second decade of hosting a fun-filled weekend retreat for cancer survivors, the Morton Plant Mease Caring Partners volunteer group are accepting applications through August 14th to attend Camp Living Springs.

During the 3-day retreat, survivors participate in canoeing, fishing, nature walks, meditation, line dancing, arts and crafts, campfires and other fun opportunities. A memorial wreath is also created by the campers to remember former campers who lost their battle with cancer.

“There are very few opportunities for adult cancer survivors to participate in a camp like Camp Living Springs. It really is uplifting for the survivors to get away and enjoy themselves with people who are going through similar circumstances. The campers and volunteers really have a great time,” says Carol Nelson, Camp Living Springs committee member.

This year’s camp takes place from October 16-18th at the 100-acre, DaySpring Conference Center in Ellenton, Florida. The camp is offered to cancer survivors 18 years and older. The entire retreat is free to survivors, including transportation, food and accommodations. For more information and to request an application, call Morton Plant Caring Partners at (727) 461-8010.

In 2001, Camp Living Springs was honored with the Daily Points of Light Award. Sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation, the Corporation for National Service and the Knights of Columbus, the award recognizes organizations demonstrating an innovative approach to volunteer service. Camp Living Springs was also awarded the 2001 Extraordinary Program Award from the American Society for Directors of Volunteer Services.
