Batter Up! Morton Plant Mease, Clearwater Threshers Host Third Annual Pitch for Pink to Strike Out Breast Cancer

Baseball Fundraiser Creates Awareness, Benefits Breast Cancer Health Services

CLEARWATER, Fla., (July 2, 2008) - Take me out to the ball game and enjoy more than peanuts and Cracker Jack by participating in the third annual Pitch for Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Night sponsored by Morton Plant Mease Health Care and the Clearwater Threshers baseball team. Threshers players will dazzle fans by sporting pink baseball jerseys and a silent auction will be held to benefit the breast health services and programs of Morton Plant Mease Health Care.

“It’s an opportunity to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer programs and treatments, and to be inspired by breast cancer survivors who’ll take part in the event with a victory lap around the baseball field. It’s also just a great night of family fun. It’s always fun to see the players outfitted in those fantastic pink jerseys,” said Holly Duncan, president of the Morton Plant Mease Foundation, co-sponsor of the event along with the Clearwater Threshers.

Pitch for Pink will be held on Friday, August 8 at Bright House Networks Field, 601 Old Coachman Road in Clearwater. The Threshers – Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies - will take on the Tampa Yankees. Stadium gates open at 5:30 p.m. The first pitch will be thrown at approximately 7 p.m.

Pitch for Pink Highlights:

  • Threshers players will be outfitted in pink baseball jerseys
  • First 1,000 women to arrive at Bright House Networks Field will receive a free commemorative pink Threshers jersey
  • Breast cancer survivor walk will take place on the baseball field prior to the start of the game
  • More than 100 silent auction items will be available to bid on including the pink jerseys worn by Threshers players the night of the game
  • Winning baseball jersey bidders will have an opportunity to meet Threshers players
  • Baseball ticket prices are $4, $6 and $9, and are available for purchase by visiting or by calling (727) 467-4457.

How Pitch for Pink Benefits Breast Cancer Programs

In 2007, Pitch for Pink raised $22,000 for the Morton Plant Mease Foundation benefiting programs such as the Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center, located in the Powell Cancer Center at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater. The center opened in February 2002 and was the first facility of its kind in the Tampa Bay area to combine advanced medical technology with process improvements to reduce the time for the diagnosis of breast cancer from weeks to days. The Breast Center, which features a soothing environment with fountains, murals and artwork, was designed to give patients a sense of peace and serenity. The name of the center honors the memory of Carroll and Mable Cheek’s daughter, Susan, who died of breast cancer in 1997.

    2008 Breast Cancer Statistics

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among American women in 2008; about 1,990 new cases are expected in men. Nearly 41,000 women and men will die from breast cancer this year.
