2008 Press Releases
Morton Plant North Bay Hospital Team Member Honored by Pasco County School Board

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla., (May 15, 2008) - For nearly a decade Lauren Olson, a Team Resources (human resources) recruiter at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, has helped to educate dozens of teenagers and promote the future of health care by bringing together Pasco County students with physicians and nurses. Olson teams students with members of the hospital staff to offer first-hand experience in health care and assist students in completing senior school projects. Last month, Olson was awarded a certificate of appreciation by the Pasco County School Board for her dedication and outstanding service to the students of Pasco County.

“Lauren is to be commended. The partnership between Pasco County schools and Morton Plant North Bay is a win, win for everyone. Not only do the students gain valuable first-hand knowledge of what it’s like to work in a hospital, but we are also afforded the opportunity to encourage these young people to consider a rewarding career in health care,” said John D. Couris, administrator and chief operating officer, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital.

The high school seniors spend 15 hours “job shadowing” hospital staff and researching areas of health care. The information forms the basis of their senior project. Pasco County schools require the completion of a senior project to qualify for graduation. Olson says the one-on-one experience between students and staff wouldn’t be possible without the support of everyone at the hospital.

“From team members who work in anesthesia to those in ultrasound, the entire staff at Morton Plant North Bay is always there to give these kids a wonderful experience. This honor belongs to everyone,” said Olson.

As a Team Resources recruiter, Olson assists in attracting and retaining new hospital employees. Olson was presented with the certificate of appreciation on April 22 at a Pasco County School Board meeting. In addition to high school senior projects, Olson also facilitates other job shadowing opportunities for area students. She is a board member for the Career and Academic Partners in Action (CAPA) at River Ridge High School and serves on the advisory board of the Health Career Academy at Gulf and Ridgewood high schools. Olson is active in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) offering professional career guidance to students such as resume writing and job interview skills. She is also a volunteer with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
