Morton Plant Mease Teams Up with Pinellas County Schools to Provide Free Athletic Physicals|
CLEARWATER, Fla., (April 18, 2008) - The best defense is a good offense and for student athletes that means taking steps to help ensure good health before heading out onto the field or court next school year. Student athletes attending Pinellas County high schools are invited to receive free athletic physicals performed by Morton Plant Mease Health Care physicians, certified athletic trainers and physical therapists. The free physicals will be offered the following dates and locations:
- Saturday, May 3
- 8:00 a.m. to noon
- Ptak Orthopaedic & Neuroscience Pavilion
- 430 Morton Plant Street
- Clearwater, FL
- Saturday, May 17
- 8:00 a.m. to noon
- Palm Harbor University High School
- 1900 Omaha Street
- Palm Harbor, FL
The comprehensive physicals include checks of height, weight, blood pressure, vision, lungs and a musculoskeletal exam. Free information will also be provided by the Morton Plant Mease Lung Center on how young athletes can easily and effectively manage asthma symptoms. If during the course of an athletic physical, a student is found to have a medical condition requiring additional screening and/or treatment, the student will be referred to a Morton Plant Mease specialist at a later date.
Students from 17 high schools in Pinellas County have been invited to participate in this year’s athletic physicals. They are: Calvary Christian High School, Clearwater High School, Clearwater Catholic High School, Countryside High School, Dixie Hollins High School, Dunedin High School, East Lake High School, Indian Rocks Christian School, Largo High School, Palm Harbor University High School, Pinellas Park High School, Osceola High School, Seminole High School, Tarpon Springs High School, Northside Christian School, Lakeside Christian School and Keswick Christian School.
Morton Plant Mease will provide the athletic physicals free of charge; however individual schools may request a $15 fee from students to help support school booster clubs. Student athletes under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, or registration forms must be pre-signed.
Physicals provided by Morton Plant Mease meet the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) requirements for participation in high school sports. The FHSAA requires student athletes to have a physical evaluation before he or she can participate in any form of physical conditioning related to interscholastic athletics such as running, jumping, swimming or lifting weights.
