Morton Plant Hospital Cardiac Care Receives Ninth National Top 100 Recognition
12/04/2007

One of Only Two Hospitals Nationally to Receive the Thomson 100 Top Hospitals Recognition for Nine Years Running

CLEARWATER, Fla., (December 4, 2007) – Morton Plant Hospital has been recognized as a 100 Top hospital in a national study, the 2007 Thomson 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success, formerly the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals study. Morton Plant is one of only two hospitals in the United States to have received Top 100 recognition for heart care for nine consecutive years.

“Morton Plant has been honored with the 100 Top Hospitals distinction every year that the award for heart care has been given out. The award acknowledges our consistent commitment to cardiac care ever since Morton Plant performed its first open heart procedure more than three decades ago,” said Philip K. Beauchamp, president and chief executive officer of Morton Plant Mease Health Care.

Using detailed empirical performance data from publicly available 2005 and 2006 Medicare MedPAR data and 2006 Medicare cost reports, the Thomson study examined the performance of nearly 1,000 U.S. hospitals by analyzing their outcomes for eight measures related to congestive heart failure, heart attacks, coronary artery bypass grafts (CABGs), and percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs), such as angioplasties.

The measures were calculated for three classes of hospitals – teaching with cardiovascular residency programs, teaching without cardiovascular residency programs, and community hospitals. Morton Plant is in the teaching hospital without a cardiovascular residency program.

With the opening of the Morgan Heart Hospital a year ago, Morton Plant became the first cardiac program in the Tampa Bay area to initiate the concept of universal beds. As open heart patients recover, the care is stepped down or changed to meet their current condition while they remain in one room and one bed, eliminating the need to move patients from room to room or floor to floor. Universal beds offer greater comfort and convenience for the patient and their family.

“It’s this kind of groundbreaking heart care and the dedication of our cardiovascular team to ensure that we’re providing the highest level of heart care and meeting national standards, that results in 100 Top Hospital honors every year,” said Thomas Deal, M.D., former open heart surgeon, Morton Plant physician director of open heart surgery services.

Thomson Healthcare researchers scored hospitals in eight key performance areas: risk-adjusted medical mortality, risk-adjusted surgical mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures score, percentage of CABG patients with internal mammary artery use, procedure volume, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.

According to the study, if all cardiovascular hospitals achieved the same results as the 100 Top Hospitals award winners, more than 7,000 lives would be saved and nearly 750 medical complications would be avoided annually. There also was a large difference in the volume of heart procedures performed by the cardiovascular award-winning hospitals and their peers. The winning hospitals performed nearly two-thirds more coronary artery bypass graft surgeries (CABGs) and percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs).

Since 1999 Morton Plant has been awarded 16 Top 100 Hospital designations in the areas of cardiovascular, stroke, orthopaedic and overall care by the Thomson 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success.
