Oh Baby! Morton Plant Mease Childbirth Education Online
09/12/2007

CLEARWATER, Fla., (September 12, 2007) - Expectant parents who send images of sonograms to friends and family via e-mail and shop for their new baby online may also want to try a new online childbirth class offered by Morton Plant Mease Health Care. An alternative to traditional childbirth education, online childbirth preparation gives expectant parents the opportunity to learn about labor and childbirth at their own pace on their personal computer.

“More and more, people are turning to the Internet for health information,” said Marcia Albanese, director of Women’s and Children’s Services for Morton Plant Mease Health Care. “Our online childbirth classes give expectant parents important information about the childbirth experience in a format that fits in better with their schedule and lifestyles.” Parents can each take the online course at different times. “This is a great solution for expectant parents who may have different work schedules, etc.”

Videos are embedded and parents are encouraged to make notes about what they have learned. A quiz at the end of each section reinforces the information they have just viewed.

The three-hour online course is followed by a two-and-a-half hour in-person “BirthShop” conducted by an RN who is also a certified childbirth educator and registered doula. The in-person class provides an opportunity to talk directly with the childbirth educator regarding their questions about childbirth. A question and answer session allows participants to further clarify the information provided online.

“Only a handful of hospitals in the United States offer online childbirth preparation as part of their prenatal course offerings,” noted Albanese.

In addition to the online option, traditional childbirth preparation classes in a classroom setting are available in a variety of formats to fit most busy schedules. The cost of the online course is $45.
