Morton Plant Mease Offers Free Physicals to Pinellas County Student Athletes|
Physicals Include Free Cardiac Screenings
CLEARWATER, Fla., (April 19, 2007) - The end of the school year is just around the corner and that means preparing for next year, especially for student athletes. On Saturday, May 5 and May 19, Morton Plant Mease physicians, certified athletic trainers and physical therapists will provide free athletic physicals to Pinellas County high school student athletes.
The comprehensive physicals will include checks of height, weight, blood pressure, vision, lungs and a musculoskeletal exam. Additionally, student athletes who through the screening process are found to have an irregular heart condition such as a murmur or those students who request an additional check of their heart, will be offered a free cardiac screening using an electrocardiogram (EKG) or echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) to measure their heart rate and regularity of heartbeats.
Free athletic physicals and cardiac screenings will be offered during the following dates, times and locations:

Students from 14 high schools in Pinellas County have been invited to participate in this year’s athletic physicals. They are: Calvary Christian High School, Clearwater High School, Clearwater Catholic High School, Countryside High School, Dixie Hollins High School, Dunedin High School, East Lake High School, Indian Rocks Christian School, Largo High School, Palm Harbor University High School, Pinellas Park High School, Osceola High School, Seminole High School and Tarpon Springs High School.
Morton Plant Mease will provide the athletic physicals free of charge; however individual schools may request a $15 fee from students to help support school booster clubs.
The Florida High School Athletic Association requires student-athletes to have a physical evaluation before he or she can participate in any form of physical conditioning related to interscholastic athletics such as running, jumping, swimming or lifting weights.
