Morton Plant Mease Foundation Rises to Challenge, Receives Prestigious Kresge Foundation Grant|
CLEARWATER, Fla., (December 20, 2006) -The Morton Plant Mease Foundation, an organization supporting the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease Health Care, is one of only two organizations in the Tampa Bay area to receive a $1.5 million challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation. The other recipient is the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer & Research Institute, a partner of Morton Plant Mease Cancer Care.
The Kresge Foundation is a national foundation established in 1924 by Sebastian S. Kresge, founder of the five and dime stores, to promote the well being of mankind.
“This is an exceptional honor and a tremendous benefit to the community,” said Phil Henderson, chairman of the Morton Plant Mease Foundation, “In order to receive the $1.5 million dollar grant, the Morton Plant Mease Foundation was required to raise nearly $8 million. We met and significantly exceeded that goal because of the continuing generosity of Morton Plant Mease donors.”
Kresge Foundation grants are awarded to institutions operating in the areas of health and long-term care, higher education, arts and humanities, science and the environment, and public affairs. Grants are made toward projects involving construction or renovation of facilities and the purchase of major capital equipment or real estate. Grant recipients must raise initial funds toward their respective projects before requesting foundation assistance. Grants are then made on a challenge basis, requiring the raising of remaining funds, ensuring completion of the projects.
In addition to a $5 million dollar private donation from Clearwater residents Larry and Patty Morgan, the Kresge challenge grant has helped fund the construction of the Morgan Heart Hospital at Morton Plant.
“The Morgan’s donation is the single largest donation ever given to the Morton Plant Mease Foundation and we believe it inspired others to increase their giving, helping us achieve this historic match,” said Henderson.
Established in 1977, Morton Plant Mease Foundation provides philanthropic support to the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease Health Care to achieve medical excellence and provide the care our community needs.
