2006 Press Releases
Morton Plant Mease Appoints New Vice President of Medical Affairs for Morton Plant Hospital

CLEARWATER, Fla., (October 24, 2006) -Morton Plant Mease Health Care announces the appointment of Gregory T. Buran, M.D. as vice president of Medical Affairs for Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater. Among his responsibilities, Dr. Buran will serve as a liaison to the Morton Plant medical staff with a focus on medical education, patient safety and physician credentialing.

“Morton Plant Mease conducted a nationwide search for the vice president of Medical Affairs,” said Philip K. Beauchamp, F.A.C.H.E., president and chief executive officer, Morton Plant Mease Health Care. “Dr. Buran will serve as an important part of our medical staff leadership team as we continue to partner with our physicians to leverage new technology to improve the overall health of the community.”

Dr. Buran has more than two decades of experience working in the field of medicine and health care management. Prior to joining Morton Plant Mease, he was the medical director for utilization management and throughput providing medical support for Henry Ford Hospital and Henry Ford Medical Group in Detroit. His experience in medical administration has included such accomplishments as successfully lowering the length of hospital stays and readmissions, streamlining emergency department admissions, instituting a computerized outreach program to promote mammography screenings and assisting with the major redesign of an electronic medical recordkeeping system.

“Implementing an electronic medical recordkeeping system (EMR) is at the forefront of health care system missions across the United States. Because it’s computerized and paperless, an EMR can provide physicians and medical staff with immediate access to patient records, delivering a higher quality of care and improving patient safety,” said Donald A. Pocock, M.D., F.A.C.P., C.P.E., chief medical officer, Morton Plant Mease Health Care.

Dr. Buran has an undergraduate degree from Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, Michigan in mathematics and health sciences. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan and completed a residency in internal medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He is an American Board of Internal Medicine Diplomate and a member of the American College of Physicians, American College of Physician Executives and Society of General Internal Medicine. In 2005, Dr. Buran was awarded the Focus on People Award for his work to improve emergency department care.

Bernard A. Macik, Jr., M.D. remains the vice president of Medical Affairs for Mease Dunedin Hospital and has assumed responsibilities for Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor. In addition to his position as chief medical officer for Morton Plant Mease, Dr. Pocock is the vice president of Medical Affairs for Morton Plant North Bay Hospital in New Port Richey.
