Morton Plant Mease Health Care Displays Artistic Flair For Healing

DUNEDIN, Fla., (April 19, 2006) - From natural, soothing scenes of Florida landscapes to fun, eye-catching motifs including the alphabet displayed in flowers and herbs - visitors to Mease Dunedin Hospital feel as if they've entered an art museum because in a sense they have. Morton Plant Mease Health Care, which includes Mease Dunedin Hospital, has partnered with the Dunedin Fine Art Center to display fine art in a corridor of the hospital.

"We want visitors to the hospital to feel as if they're in a warm, welcoming environment that's uplifting and comforting," said Lou Galdieri, M.H.A., B.S.N., administrator and chief operating officer, Mease Dunedin Hospital. "Studies have shown that art and color create an environment that can improve healing."

The art also reflects Morton Plant Mease's commitment to community outreach programs. The art is the work of Dunedin Fine Art faculty members and/or students. The works are primarily two-dimensional and include abstracts, representational portraits, collages, watercolors, lithographs and photographs. About 20 new works of art are displayed at Mease Dunedin every two to four months and are available for purchase.

"The response from patients, their families and hospital employees has been wonderful," said Galdieri. "When you're surrounded by bright, beautiful scenery your entire mood and outlook can be transformed."

A plaque with the words Keep Art in Your Heart is also displayed next to the artworks. The mission of the Dunedin Fine Art Center is to serve the general public by providing cultural awareness, creative experience and educational programming for adults and children through the visual arts.

Established in 1937, Mease Dunedin Hospital is a 173-bed facility committed to improving the health of everyone it serves.
