Morton Plant Mease Names Bernard A. Macik, Jr., M.D. as New Vice President of Medical Affairs|
CLEARWATER, Fla., (February 16, 2006) - Morton Plant Mease Health Care is announcing the appointment of Bernard A. Macik, Jr., M.D. as Vice President of Medical Affairs for Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater and Mease Dunedin Hospital. Both hospitals are part of the Morton Plant Mease Health Care System.
"Whether it's his participation in physician training conferences or community discussions on health care issues, for more than two decades Dr. Macik has demonstrated his leadership skills and that he is an integral member of Morton Plant Mease," said Philip K. Beauchamp, president and chief executive officer, Morton Plant Mease Health Care. "Dr. Macik will now continue his leadership role as a key member of the senior management team - a liaison between management and the medical staffs to address planning and operational issues pivotal to providing the best, most compassionate health care."
Richard W. Shea, M.D., who has served as Vice President of Medical Affairs for Morton Plant Mease from 1993 to 1998 and then again from 2002 to present, will continue to serve as Vice President, Medical Affairs with responsibilities for Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor and Morton Plant North Bay Hospital in New Port Richey.
"The medical leadership shown by Dr. Shea has resulted in communication and planning initiatives with medical staffs that have led to improved quality of patient care. Dr. Shea's expertise and dedication are invaluable and will continue to benefit fellow physicians, nurses and members of the community," stated Beauchamp.
Prior to accepting the Vice President of Medical Affairs position, Dr. Macik has practiced medicine for more than 20 years as a board certified neurologist with privileges at Mease Dunedin and Mease Countryside Hospitals. He also served as co-director of the Mease Hospitals Sleep Laboratory. Dr. Macik earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He completed his internal medicine and neurology residencies at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York.
Dr. Macik is affiliated with the American Academy of Neurology and the Florida Neurological Society. He has spearheaded medical research projects on painful diabetic neuropathy, insomnia, and Parkinson's disease. Additionally, Dr. Macik has shown to be a valuable member of the community - volunteering at area schools as a science lecturer and as a coach for swimming, little league and soccer.
Dr. Shea is board certified in internal medicine and medical management. Previously, he practiced primary care internal medicine in Attleboro, Massachusetts where he was named Sturdy Memorial Hospital's first Vice President and Medical Director. Dr. Shea received his undergraduate degree from Holy Cross College, Worcester, Massachusetts and his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
