Morton Plant Caring Partners Invites Adult Cancer Survivors to Nationally Recognized Retreat|
CLEARWATER, Fla., (July 26, 2005)- Whether it's reclining in a canoe, fingers dangling in the cool water of the Little Manatee River or relaxing with the calming chants of yoga - adult cancer survivors will be treated to a weekend of tranquility and fun at this year's Morton Plant Caring Partners' Camp Living Springs. The camp provides three days of activities intended to help cancer survivors cope with medical treatments and range of emotions they may be experiencing. The camp will be held from Friday, October 28 through Sunday, October 30, 2005. Applications to participate in the camp must be completed and received by Morton Plant no later than Tuesday, August 30, 2005.
"This is our ninth Camp Living Springs. Our campers come from all over the Tampa Bay area and beyond," said Martie Henderson, president of Morton Plant Caring Partners. "It's an opportunity for cancer survivors 18 years or older to come together, offer support and inspiration to each other and have fun."
Held at a 100-acre retreat facility, located in Ellenton, Fla., activities at Camp Living Springs include crafts, canoeing, music and dancing. One of the more poignant moments takes place when campers share their stories of survival and create a wreath paying tribute to past campers who have lost their fight with cancer. All food and accommodations are provided free of charge. The camp is staffed by volunteers and is fully funded by Morton Plant Caring Partners, the hospital's volunteer organization.
"We know we can't make them forget about their illness, but we can provide an atmosphere that promotes camaraderie and nurtures the spirit," added Henderson.
Camp Living Springs has been held every year in the fall since 1998. For the first time in 2004 there was a spring camp. The event has been awarded numerous national awards. In November 2001, Caring Partners' Camp Living Springs won the President's Daily Points of Light award sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation, the Corporation for National Service and the Knights of Columbus. This award honors organizations demonstrating an innovative approach to volunteer service. Earlier in 2001, Camp Living Springs also won the 2001 Extraordinary Program Award from the American Society for Directors of Volunteer Services.
