Identifying and then avoiding headache triggers can reduce the frequency of attacks. Medication overuse is a common trigger for headaches. Use of pain medications more than two times a week for more than two to three months can cause headaches.
Certain foods can also act as chemical triggers and hormone fluctuations during menstrual cycles can also cause migraines. Stress management and coping techniques, along with relaxation training, can help prevent or reduce the severity of the migraine attacks. Stress is a trigger for headaches in sensitive individuals, but is not the primary cause.
Headache sufferers can minimize the frequency of migraine by eating on a regular schedule and getting adequate rest. Regular exercise – in moderation – can also help prevent migraines.
