Morton Plant North Bay Expands Heart Care
03/15/2010

Procedures Afford Pasco County More Choice in Cardiac Services

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla., (March 8, 2010) – Morton Plant North Bay has received approval from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) to perform Level 1 percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). PCI is also known as an angioplasty, a minimally invasive heart procedure.

“Improving access often means improving care and with the addition of emergency and elective cardiac procedures, we are able to provide West Pasco residents more options for potentially life-saving heart care, right in their own neighborhood,” said John Couris, chief operating officer, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital.

Level 1 PCI approval covers both emergency and elective angioplasty procedures. Morton Plant North Bay began offering emergency angioplasty on January 25, 2010. Elective angioplasty for hospitalized patients began in early February and elective outpatient angioplasty will start in April.

Currently patients experiencing heart attack symptoms who need the intervention of angioplasty are transported to a hospital with an open-heart surgery suite. “The more quickly you can successfully restore blood flow to the heart, the better chance you have for recovery,” said Carlos Bayron, MD, an interventional cardiologist. “All in all, providing patients with angioplasty stents within our hospital is ultimately the best way to care for our patients.”

Morton Plant North Bay’s Cardiac Services is an established cardiovascular program that currently provides diagnostic cardiac catheterizations, as well as peripheral vascular interventions. A catheterization is a diagnostic test that determines if blood is flowing properly to the heart. Morton Plant North Bay’s Cardiac Services are trained to the same high standards as that have allowed Morton Plant Mease Cardiology to receive national recognition for its patient care and features:

  • An all digital cardiac catheterization lab
  • An electrocardiograms and echocardiograms (EKG/ECHO) unit to test for heart abnormalities
  • Cardiac stress testing lab that includes nuclear medicine testing

A PCI consists of maneuvering a tiny wire into a blocked coronary artery and then inflating a balloon to re-open the artery and restore blood flow to the heart. A stent or thin, wire, mesh tube may then be placed in the re-opened artery to keep it from closing.
