Low Vision Occupational Therapy

At the Morton Plant Mease Outpatient Rehabilitative Services at Palm Harbor, our occupational therapists help clients with low vision and visual impairments due to macular degeneration (AMD), head injuries, glaucoma, stroke (CVA), diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases. The goal of therapy is to become as independent, efficient, and safe in performing day-to-day activities as possible.

What Can I Expect From Occupational Therapy?

An occupational therapist will see you individually to assess and discuss any difficulties you may be having with daily activities. Other family member attendance, especially at the first appointment, is suggested although not mandatory. Goals are established based on an individual's living situation, medical condition, and personal priorities. Some possible goals may include: taking medications, reading labels, preparing simple foods, recognizing faces, increasing safety in the home and community, performing self-care, learning about available low vision resources, reading, writing, seeing faces, maintaining written communication, using a telephone, bill paying, watching TV, and viewing and finding things in your environment. Our therapists teach special viewing and compensatory techniques to use available vision. They can also train you in adaptive device use and techniques, as well as in the use of magnification devices for daily tasks. Specially trained to work with vision loss, our therapists can also address other possible accompanying physical, mental or neurological issues affecting independence.
